Frequently Asked
Questions

What is the weather policy?

We take weather seriously at Fly Badlands! Our aviation team is constantly evaluating the safety and quality of what the weather permits for our flights. If unforeseen or inclement weather prohibits us from fulfilling your scheduled time for your flight, we will work with you to find an acceptable replacement time.

Most weather that would prohibit our flights are due to wind conditions, which can change quickly - i.e. adjusting your flight by a couple of hours may be the difference of a go/no go. Our team will be in contact with you should we have news ahead of time that we may need to reschedule.

The best windows of weather are usually in the early morning or in the evening before sunset. The closer to the hotter parts of the day may result in a slightly bumpier ride.

When booking online, please pick your preferred time; we’ll reach out to you to confirm, discuss weather, and reschedule at no charge. Should the weather, your schedule, or our schedule simply not align – your deposit will be fully refunded.

Is my online booking deposit refundable?

If weather or unforeseen maintenance issues arise, we’ll do our best to reschedule your booking at a time that works for you. If we can’t find a suitable time, we’ll provide a full refund.

See our Cancellation & Refund Policy.

Are small airplanes safe?

All of our scenic tours and charters are operated by professionally trained, commercially rated pilots. Our aircraft are maintained to the highest standards, following strict maintenance schedules set by the Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, our pilots are highly experienced in mountain flying and well-versed in the unique weather patterns of the Badlands region. Your safety is our top priority!

What about turbulence, will it be bumpy?

We do our best to make your ride as comfortable as possible, but some turbulence is completely natural. The bumps you may feel are caused by air pockets and shifts in wind speed and direction. The Badlands region features ridges, gullies, and open prairie—all of which can influence wind patterns. Rest assured, any movement you experience is perfectly normal and safe. Our pilots only fly when conditions are right for a smooth and enjoyable ride.

When is the best time of day to fly?

We fly from sunrise to sunset every day, but if you’re chasing the most breathtaking views, early mornings and late afternoons are pure magic - and the smoothest air!. The hour just after sunrise and the hour before sunset—known as Golden Hour for a reason!—bathe the landscape in warm, glowing light, casting long shadows and bringing out the rich textures and colors of the Badlands. This is also when you are mostly likely to see any wildlife. It’s a truly unforgettable time to be in the sky. Sunrise and sunset options can be found as an add-on on the booking page.

What should I wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suited to the day’s weather and temperature. Layers are a great option, especially for early morning or evening flights when it can be cooler. Please wear closed toe shoes, and just dress comfortably so you can relax and enjoy the ride!

Should I tip the Pilot?

Our pilots are dedicated professionals committed to giving you the best possible experience—no tip expected. That said, if you feel your pilot went above and beyond to make your flight memorable, gratuities are always appreciated as a gesture of thanks!

Can we still fly if there is bad weather?

Weather can be very dynamic to navigate. Our professional pilots are trained to high standards, so it will be their decision to cancel a flight. If your flight is cancelled due to weather, we will reschedule you to the next best time.

Do I need to sign a waiver?

Yes. Prior to the flight, everybody will be required to sign a liability waiver. For participants under the age of 18, a parent or guardian is required to sign on their behalf. If you do not wish to sign the waiver, your flight will be cancelled.

How early and where should I arrive for my reservation?

Please arrive no later than 10 minutes prior to your reservation. Feel free to arrive earlier than that (within reason) and relax in our office where you can find refreshments! This is where you will receive your safety briefing and sign your waivers.

What is the age limit?

We welcome passengers starting at 5 years old! Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult or have a parent or guardian sign a waiver. While there’s no upper age limit, we’re happy to discuss any mobility concerns with you ahead of time to ensure a safe and enjoyable flight for everyone.

Is there a maximum weight/height allowed in the aircraft?

For comfort and mobility within the aircraft, we recommend a maximum weight of 225 lbs (102 kg) and a height limit of 6’6” (198 cm) per passenger. These aren't strict cutoffs at an exact weight, but if you or someone in your group is near or above these guidelines, please reach out ahead of time. Our pilots can perform a proper weight and balance check to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone. We're happy to work with you to accommodate your needs!

Aircraft have a certified maximum weight limit governed by the FAA. For the safety of our customers and our crews, we will not exceed these limits.

Where do we meet?

Join us at the Wall Municipal Airport at the Fly Badlands office. Put “Wall Municipal Airport” into your GPS - the entrance is on Airport Rd (NOT W 4th Ave). Take the second turn (the main road) into the airport (the first one is a small dirt path into an old taxiway - do not turn here). Follow the sign for Fly Badlands, and park next to the office in any available space.

Please call ahead if you are in a big rig/extended camper for proper parking.  (See map for details).

How long should I set aside for the entire experience?

  • For the 30min scenic flight, please set aside an hour from arriving in your vehicle to departing.

  • For the 60min longer scenic route or the Adventure Altitude route please set aside 1.5 hours.

  • If you are customizing a tour, our office will let you know depending on our plan.

This extra buffer on any tour will allow for ample time to sign the liability waiver, have our safety briefing, and make sure everyone is comfortable before departing on our flight. Can’t wait to see you!

Failure to comply with any and all of Fly Badlands's crew member instructions before, during, or after flight and while on Fly Badlands/Wall Municipal Airport property may result in an immediate cancellation or flight with no refund permitted.

Fly Badlands and any staff members reserves the right to cancel flights for individuals/groups that are deemed unfit to fly. This is at staff and the pilot's discretion. There will be no refunds for unruly or unfit passengers - this includes behavior, not respecting safety briefing or procedure, not respecting the pilot or any staff, intoxication (of any kind), etc. The total amount of flight will be due by the entire party, regardless if any one passenger in the party is deemed unfit to fly.
